When you are starting building a social media presence for your brand, you have many different platforms to choose from. There is Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn…

Is your head spinning already?

Well, don’t worry, because today we are going to talk about all those social media platforms I mentioned above. Also, I am going to break it down for you why each of those platforms is important for different reasons.

While the perfect option would be for your business to be active on ALL social media platforms, it is just not possible. Well, it is if you have a whole team working for you and they manage your social media channels.

However, for other creative entrepreneurs and business owners, you have to decide which social media platforms will benefit you the most. This way it will be possible for you to be active on social media AND still run your business.

Also, different platforms have different audiences. For example, if you are a beauty entrepreneur, using LinkedIn is not going to be as beneficial for you as using Instagram. LinkedIn is a business orientated platform, and you will not find beauty tutorials on LinkedIn Pulse.

So, let’s get started!

FACEBOOK

Facebook is the largest social media platform in the world. It has over 2.2 billion active users around the globe. That is a significant number; however, it does not mean it will bring you new leads.

According to statistics, 81 % of Facebook users are adults aged 18 to 29, so if that is your target audience, you have a network that is suited for your business. Also, when it comes to gender split, 74 % of users are women, and 62 % are men.

So, if your business is targeted towards men, Facebook is the perfect platform as it has the highest number of male users out of all social media platforms!

Also, Facebook is a great social media platform to use for ads, because you can play around and find what works best for you even with a small budget.

However, there is one thing to keep in mind when prioritising Facebook over other social media platforms. With the 2018 algorithm change, this platform prioritises personal accounts over business pages.

What does that mean for your business?

Well, you have fewer chances of being seen by your audience even if they like your business page. So, to maximise your reach, you have to consider a smart strategy if you use Facebook for your business.

INSTAGRAM

Oh, my favourite baby!

Instagram has over 800 million active monthly users, and its engagement rate is higher than Facebook engagement.

If you are a business that relies on visuals, Instagram is THE platform for you. Everything beauty, travel, fashion, lifestyle, interior and product-related fits perfectly with Instagram because people go to Instagram to see ‘pretty things’ and dream about shit.

When it comes to user ages, Instagram has the biggest audience aged 18-29 like Facebook. So, in this case, both platforms are okay if your targeted audience is in that age bracket.

However, Instagram lets you get more personal with your audience. With its story feature and IG TV (Youtube knock-off you could say), it enables you to show your audience what’s behind the scenes and faces behind the brand in real time. I believe it is a significant factor to keep in mind because this is a new age marketing and audiences love personality behind the brand.

TWITTER

Twitter is an excellent platform for business for a few reasons. While it has only over 330 million active monthly users, it is a unique platform to participate in conversations.

93 % of users who follow small and medium size business are likely to purchase from them. It shows that people are invested in companies they support on this platform.

From the statistic side, most of the users fall in the same age bracket as with Instagram and Facebook.

Another thing that is great with Twitter, it is the perfect platform for customer service. People love to engage with brands when it comes to issues with service and products, and your business has a chance to shine with everyone watching.

If you know how to nail customer service on Twitter, people will love your brand for it.

LINKEDIN

LinkedIn is a professional-orientated platform that is perfect for B2B businesses. Both women and men are equally represented on this platform, and LinkedIn is the most popular amongst 25-49-year-olds. As you can see, the demographics are a little bit different compared to other social media platforms.

If you are a B2B business then you 100 % should be on LinkedIn as it is a perfect place for networking in a professional environment. You can find potential clients and buyers on this platform and keep updated with news in your industry.

Also, LinkedIn Pulse is a great tool to get more exposure and get noticed by potential clients in your industry. However, if you are not B2B orientated business, LinkedIn might not be worth the hassle as it might not produce the same results as other platforms.

Now, you might be thinking that you don’t want to choose one of these social media platforms but instead use all of them! What should you do in this case?

Well, I suggest starting small and then expanding. If you are going jump straight into marketing your business on all channels when you don’t have a person or people dedicated to that job, it might not give you the best results.

In the beginning, I would suggest choosing two main platforms to start building your audience, AND then if you feel like you need it, you can begin using others as well.

I hope my blog post helped you to understand each platform better!
